Abortion

Finding out you are pregnant is a life changing experience.  If you are not ready to start a family or go through the term, it can be a difficult time.  Forty-nine percent of all pregnancies are unplanned.  Eighty percent of pregnancies to women under the age of twenty are unplanned.  Pregnancy is a major life-changing event you have to be ready and willing to go through experience whether the pregnancy itself was panned or not.  You should have the right to rule over your own body.

An abortion can end an unwanted pregnancy and allow you to get on with your life.  Abortion can be defined as the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy.  Medical professionals can administer medications or perform surgery to remove the embryo or fetus and placenta.

When a woman makes the decision to terminate her pregnancy, she has two different abortion options:
  • Medical abortion
  • Surgical abortion

Medical abortions are performed with the use of medicine and are effective 97% of the time.  This type of abortion can be administered within the first 9 weeks of pregnancy.  It involves at least two trips to the doctor.  During the first visit, the woman is given a medicine called Mifepristone, which blocks progesterone causing the lining of the womb to thin.  During the second visit, the doctor gives the woman another medicine called Misoprostol, which makes the uterus contract and empty.  Many women will bleed for about 13 days after taking the medicines.

A surgical abortion is a procedure performed by a doctor to remove the lining of the womb, which is effective 100% of the time.  This can be done by using manual vacuum aspiration and dilation or suction curettage.  Both methods involve suction to empty the womb.  This type of abortion can be performed within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

When considering an abortion, a woman should ask herself a few questions:
  • Do I have enough information regarding all the procedures and risks?
  • Have I been tested for any STDs?
  • What are the abortion laws in my state?
  • Is this fully my decision or is someone pressuring me into getting an abortion?
  • Have I talked to anyone that has undergone an abortion to discuss her experience?
  • What are my views on abortion?

When completed by an experienced medical doctor, both medical and surgical abortions are relatively safe, but as with any medical or surgical procedure, serious complications can occur.  Making the decision to have an abortion can be life altering.  You should speak with a qualified medical professional regarding your options, the procedure, and the risks.
