Allergies

Many people encounter some type of allergy within their lifetime.  Allergies can come from numerous sources including chemicals, the environment, and medication treatment.  An allergic reaction occurs when a substance comes into contact with the body or respiratory system and the body has a hypersensitive response to that substance which it should normally not have.  These are considered abnormal immunity system reactions.  In many cases, the symptoms are minor.  However, the symptoms from an allergy can be major and even life threatening.  Symptoms include everything from itchy eyes, running nose, and skin hives to severe reactions such as tightness of chest, swelling of throat, and/or convolutions.  When the reaction is severe enough to require medical attention, it is called anaphylaxis.

For those that do not have a life threaten allergy, you may have a seasonal or environmental allergy that is not life threatening.  For example, seasonal pollen and nature seem to be the most cause of head allergies.  Others may be allergic to substances that they digest and as a result, they may not be able to consume dairy, wheat, nuts, soy, seafood, and/or egg products.  Did you know that most babies have food allergies when they are infants and then overcome those when they get older?  In addition, some people get skin irritations from using certain chemical products such as household cleaners or going to a hair salon to have their hair colored.

People who have allergies are recommended to use products that are unscented and do not contain the allergens.  One example of this would be household laundry detergent, lotions, and cosmetics that are hypoallergenic.  The easiest way to treat an allergy is to avoid what you are allergic too.  If you cannot avoid your allergy, there may be an assortment of medications and nasal sprays to relief the symptoms.  Today there is relief from some allergies, but no cure yet.

According to researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), more than half of all current asthma cases in the U.S. can be attributed to allergies.  The study also found that allergy to cats was responsible for thirty percent of those cases of asthma.  The study was conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and found that more than half of the asthma cases were attributed to atopy.  A topy is caused from the interaction between genes and environment factors and is calculated by a positive skin allergy test to allergens.
