Birth Control

Many women are choosing to postpone pregnancy until they are ready for the commitment and responsibility of childrearing.  Women today want to have more control over their lives and they to be able to chose when they start a family.  Professional aspirations, personal situations, or health issues can all be part of why a woman would want to be able to control when or if they become pregnant.  Planning a family is a big step and something that should be well thought out if possible.

Birth control, also known as contraception, is designed to prevent pregnancy.  Women today have many different birth control options.  They can experiment until they find the one that works best for them.  No one form of birth control is completely full proof.  Some may work better for certain women.  Yet other women will feel more comfortable with certain types over others.  Some types of contraception can be used in combination with other types this offers even more protection from pregnancy.

Birth control methods can work in a variety of ways including:

  • Blocking sperm from access to the eggs, such as condoms and diaphragms
  • Keeping a woman's ovaries from releasing eggs, such as birth control pills
  • Preventing a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus's lining, such as IUDs
  • Sterilization, such as tubal ligation and vasectomy

All women have the right to decide when they are ready become pregnant.  Since there is no universal "best" method of birth control, it is important for women to know the pros and cons of each method.  Your doctor can provide answers to all your questions so you can make a well-informed decision about the contraceptive that will make you feel most comfortable.

A woman's choice of birth control should also depend on a number of factors including:
  • Health
  • Frequency of sexual activity
  • Number of sexual partners
  • Desire to have children in the future
  • Effectiveness of each method
  • Potential side effects (allergies)
  • Comfort level when using the chosen method

Though serious medical conditions from contraceptives are relatively rare, they do occur.  It is very important to speak with a medical doctor and let him/her know about your medical history, family medical history, any medications and/or nutritional supplement you may be taking, and any health or medical condition that you may have.  If you experience any adverse side effects from the use of your contraceptive, notify your doctor immediately.
