Blood Pressure

Blood pressure keeps the body organs functioning correctly and healthy.  It is one of the controlling systems for the body and the delivery of oxygen to the organs.  Vital signs are taken through arterial pressure to establish certain health issues or possible conditions.  However there are many factors that may affect a good relax reading to have a clear vital arterial pressure reading.  These include nutrition, stress, caffeine, drugs, and any existing diseases.

When the heart beats, it causes a force and pressure at which the blood is moved through the veins.  This pressure is either normal, at rest, low, or high.  Having normal at rest levels of blood pressure is good health signs.  But if you blood pressure is high then the person may be close to having a heart attack, coronary heart disease, or stroke.  On the other hand, if the pressure is low, then the organs are not receiving oxygen and nutrients for vital health.

Having a regular pressure reading is good to recognize any potential health problems.  There is no risk is getting your blood pressure taken.  Blood pressure is taken as two numbers.  The top or systolic number indicates the pressure when the heart is beating.  The bottom or diastolic number indicates the pressure of the heart when it is resting between beats.  The normal level should be around 120 over 80.  If one gets a reading of 140 to 159 over 90 to 99 then this is a warning sign to the health care provider for a possible heart attack or health condition.  The many different health conditions may include cardiovascular disorders, neurological conditions, kidney problems, pregnancy problems, heighten stress, or medication issues.  Prehypertension is when a patient has a systolic blood pressure of 120–139 mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure of 80–89 mmHg.  A person with prehypertension is at increased risk of hypertension.  It is estimated that about twenty-eight percent of American adults have prehypertension.  Help prevent a long lasting health condition by a regular blood pressure reading from your health care provider.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), high blood pressure or hypertension was noted as a primary or contributing cause of death for an estimated 277,000 Americans in 2002.  High blood pressure is known to be a major risk factor for stroke, heart disease, congestive heart failure, and kidney disease.  About thirty percent of people with high blood pressure do not know that they have it.  The CDC estimates that about ninety percent middle–aged adults will develop high blood pressure in the remainder of their lifetime.  It is estimated that in 2006 the direct and indirect costs of treating high blood pressure was $63.5 billion.
