Gynecology is the field of medicine that specializes in the health of the female reproductive system, including the uterus, vagina, and ovaries.  Most gynecologists today are also obstetricians.  Obstetrics is the medical field that specializes in the care of a woman and her offspring during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium.  A gynecological examination is quite unique in that it is very intimate and can be intimidating or even intrusive, especially if it’s your first one.  However, a gynecological exam is crucial to a woman’s good health and preventive medicine.  Though some patients report some discomfort it is typically painless.  A very important part of the examination and/or any treatment is the communication between you and your doctor.  Make sure to let him/her know of any discomfort, pain, or irritation, not just prior to your visit but while the exam is going on.

Every woman should have a gynecological exam annually.  Many women feel anxiety and nervousness just at the thought of going to a gynecologist, but a gynecological exam can be the difference between life and death.  From a medical standpoint, you should be more afraid of not having the exam.  Do not let your anxieties and fears keep you from receiving the best possible healthcare available to you.  Whether it is your first exam or one of many, you should take the time educate yourself on the procedure and your anatomy so you understand what the exam entails and why it is done.  Knowledge is the key to dispelling your fears.  Understanding what the gynecologist will be doing and why will help ease the anxiety.
