Skin Care

Our skin is the most visible and exposed organ of our body and serves as a protective barricade against injuries and diseases.  Therefore, it makes good sense to be concerned for its health and wellbeing.  It is also natural to want our skin to reflect a positive and healthy image of ourselves.  A dermatologist is a trained specialist in the care and treatment of the condition of our skin, nails, and hair.  They are trained to treat both medical and cosmetic conditions.  It is estimated that 15% (one in six) visits to a doctor are related to skin problems or associated diseases.

In the United States, skin cancer is the most treated form of cancer and it is estimated to have affect over 1,000,000 (one million) people in 2007.  The most common forms of skin cancer include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.  Melanoma is the most dangerous and if not treated early and appropriately it can be fatal.  Basal cell carcinoma is the most common and generally affects fair-skinned adults who have subjected themselves to overexposure to the sun.

A common skin condition is eczema, which is actually a group of skin disorders.  The following are all types of eczema.  Contact dermatitis comes in two forms allergic and irritant.  The allergic form is caused by sensitivity to particular substances like toxic plants.  The irritant form is caused by contact or exposure to harsh substances such as detergents, strong chemicals, and cleaning products.  Seborrhoeic eczema is common in babies and young adults.  This form of eczema affects certain parts of the body like the face, scalp, groin, and chest.   Varicose eczema typically affects the legs of older people or people with varicose veins.   Discoid eczema generally affects the extremities and results in circular, rough, flaky patches that can welt and secrete oily substance.  Atopic eczema or infantile eczema is normally found in babies and it is believed to be a hereditary condition.  It tends to manifest as a red rash and can affect any part of the body.

Tips for Good Skin Care:

  • Protection from Ultra-Violet Rays and Overexposure to Sun
  • Proper Daily Skin Hygiene
  • Keep the skin Moisturized
  • Consult Dermatologist Regarding Skin Concerns

Many things can affect the condition of your skin, such as hormonal changes, health conditions, sun exposure, diet, weather, heredity, age, smoking, medications, etc.  As we age, our skin is prone to the loss of elasticity and there are supplements your dermatologist can recommend uniquely suited for your skin care regime to help restore resiliency and vibrancy to your skin.  Perhaps you are suffering from rosacea, dermatitis, eczema, or acne.  Do not despair there is hope!  Whatever your skin care condition problem, an experienced and qualified dermatologist can help diagnose your condition and develop a unique program for you.
